E-waste salvage: End-of-life electronic equipment, particularly from data centers and industrial applications, gets disassembled and high-value ICs are recovered, cleaned, and resold. These “pulls” are genuine parts but are often presented as new.
Why Gray Market Transactions Happen
During shortage periods, buyers accept the risk of gray market sourcing because it’s the only way to keep production lines running. A procurement manager facing a factory shutdown will often accept a 50% premium from an independent distributor over no availability from authorized channels. This is a rational decision in an emergency, but it creates supply chain risks that persist long after the emergency passes.
Even outside shortage conditions, gray market sourcing occurs when authorized pricing is significantly above spot market rates. For commodity components where performance specifications are standardized, buyers may perceive the risk as acceptable. This perception is often incorrect β the risk of counterfeit infiltration in gray market channels is always present, and one bad batch can cost more in warranty claims and recalls than years of price savings.
Assessing Gray Market Risk
Not all gray market sourcing is equally risky. Key risk factors include: the nature of the component (commodity or specialized?); the reputation and inspection capabilities of the independent distributor; whether the supplier can provide documentation of the component’s provenance; and the criticality of the application. A passive resistor from an independent distributor carries different risk than a safety-critical automotive microcontroller.
